The Strategic Planning Team is a small, dynamic unit responsible for the development of land use strategies and policies to guide the future development of Monash. Working closely with the Economic Development Team, the department provides strategic direction for the future of the City of Monash.

About the Position:

The Senior Strategic Planner assists the Coordinator Strategic Planning with strategic policy development and implementation and advice for a range of key stakeholders.

  • Review, formulate and implement policies, and strategies to achieve the desired development outcomes in Monash.
  • Identify and analyse future planning issues including researching and collating data to present recommendations to Council on policy direction.
  • Preparation of local Planning Scheme Amendments.
  • Prepare submissions for, and instruct and/or advocate at Independent Panels, Ministerial Advisory Committees and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
  • Provide strategic advice and support to Statutory Planning and other Council staff on planning applications and other matters.
  • Direct consultants and advise members of the public, government and other Councils and organisations on strategic planning and other matters.

Skills and Experience:

  • A degree in Planning, Environment, Geography, Law or Economics or an allied field.
  • Extensive experience in strategic planning and policy development.
  • Experience in liaising and negotiating on strategic planning matters –including with Local and State Governments, statutory authorities, consultants, private landowners, residents and community organisations.
  • Excellent conceptual, analytic and presentation skills including the ability to - prepare, negotiate and implement planning strategies.
  • Excellent report writing skills and the ability to convey complex issues clearly and succinctly
  • Well developed interpersonal and written and oral communication skills.
  • Well developed mentoring and time/project management skills.
  • A high level of competence with MS Office applications and GIS mapping systems.
