About Us

The Community Crime Prevention Unit has responsibility for developing and implementing innovative early intervention approaches to prevent offending and support Victorian communities; and for delivering and reporting on progress towards priorities under the Crime Prevention Ministerial portfolio.

  • build evidence and a shared understanding across government and the community about effective crime prevention; and contribute to the body of knowledge about effective crime prevention practice.

The Building Safer Communities Program is a core part of the government's crime prevention approach and includes grants and community forums to support Victorian councils and community organisations to deliver innovative projects to address the causes of crime and improve community safety.

The program incorporates two competetive streams of funding, a targeted grant stream called Empowering Communities and a series of forums to support communities to work together to address crime and safety issues in the context of COVID-19 recovery.
