Role: Senior Policy Officer (Ongoing)

Position Summary:

We are seeking a high-performing Senior Policy Officer to join the Mental Health and Wellbeing Division's Programs and Performance AOD Services and Mental Health NGO's team.

The Senior Policy Officer is a role that provides advice on mental health, drugs and related matters, supports key projects in relation to these matters and develops proposals and recommendations for the consideration of senior executives and ministers.

The Senior Policy Officer will support planning and delivery of complex policy initiatives, such as the operational oversight of select mental health community support services and state-wide services. The Senior Policy Officer will have the opportunity to lead and undertake critical engagement work with a large group of diverse stakeholders across local communities, government, the mental health sector, lived experience and carer communities. A genuine ability to listen and be curious and creative will be critical to success in this position.


  • Contribute to the development and provision of advice and sound policy recommendations to senior management and government.
  • Undertake research and contribute to the development of a range of policy and initiatives within resourcing, timeline and budget parameters.
  • Assist the monitoring and reporting on high priority issues, risks and trends and assist to prepare and present comprehensive reports, ministerial briefs, cabinet and agency submissions on complex issues.
  • Support effective working relationships and the flow of information across the department and with key external stakeholders.
  • Strong emphasis on working collaboratively and flexibly across the team to deliver a range of products including cabinet submissions, directions changes, and policy papers
  • Collaboration with stakeholders in DHHS and across the VPS to coordinate whole of government responses to fast moving policy issues
  • Oversee business as usual activities such as PAEC processes, questions on notice, PPQ, review of communications products, providing policy analysis on work underway across the VPS
