An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Anatomical Pathologist to join our Department of Anatomical Pathology.

Details of Department

Austin Pathology provides comprehensive laboratory pathology testing to all the campuses of Austin Health. This service is provided in a manner consistent with the needs of a university teaching hospital and the strategic direction of Austin Health. High volume tests and most complex low volume testing are performed at the Austin Hospital. Some point of care testing is performed at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.

Austin Pathology operates in the community, supported through a number of outreach facilities and a substantial courier network, and provides Pathology services to the Mercy Hospital for Women, Goulburn Valley Health, and Kyneton Health. Specialised testing is provided to a number of external clients including other public and private pathology laboratories.

The major areas of expertise of Austin Pathology include molecular diagnostics, thrombophilia testing, protein chemistry, neuropathology, hepatopathology and isolation and identification of antibiotic resistant pathogenic organisms.

AHP recently commenced service provision in the Loddon Mallee region, and is planning for further integration that will arise from a broader State-wide pathology reform program recently announced by DHHS, which is planned for 2021. The reform will deliver the establishment of three pathology networks across the state, with the aim of improving patient outcomes by ensuring equitable and consistent access to high quality testing.

The Anatomical pathologist will:

  • Provide comprehensive pathology services.

  • Participate in Unit meetings and activities.

  • Provide an on-call service as required.

  • Provide a consultative service to other Units as required.

  • Specific areas of experience relating to this appointment are to support the pathology service development in the Loddon Mallee region, including MDMs, but also to support pathology services for Austin Health and other Austin Pathology sites and initiatives.

To be successful for this role you must:

  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA), or equivalent

  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Anatomical Pathology

  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care

  • Demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care across the continuum, and

  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching, training and research.
