Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.


An exciting opportunity currently exists for an experienced Contact Tracing Officers to join our recently created North Eastern Public Health Unit


The North East Public Health Unit (NEPHU) is a major component of a once in a generation reform of public health delivery in Victoria. This new system consists of three Melbourne metropolitan Public Health Units (North East [NEPHU], Western [WPHU], and South East [SEPHU]) who are linked with the existing six Regional Public Health Units, DHHS Intelligence, Case, Contact and Outbreak Management (ICCOM) and COVID-19 Quarantine Victoria (CQV). Together these units form a distributed network, centrally coordinated by ICCOM.


Reporting to the Team Leader, Contact Tracing and Outbreak Management (CTOM) Team, North East Public Health Network (NEPHU), the purpose of the Contact Tracing Officer is to ensure an effective and efficient response to the COVID-19 pandemic by conducting contact tracing and associated public health activities for the NEPHU. This involves implementing standardised systems and processes including case interviews, close contact interviews, settings identification and general public health activities to stop the spread of COVID-19 in metropolitan Melbourne. Actions will be in line with the Victorian DHHS policy and guidelines.


To be successful in this role you must demonstrate/Key responsibilities will include:



  • Clinical background in nursing or allied health

  • Previous contact tracing experience, ideally during the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Highly developed communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills

  • A demonstrated professional and empathetic approach to others

  • Demonstrated commitment to professionalism and maintaining confidentiality

  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills and the ability to use sound judgement

  • Demonstrated ability to practice collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary care team

  • Understand the principles of disease transmission and infectious window

  • Ability to work a rotating roster, 7 days a week, morning and afternoon shift

  • Ability to identify and escalate issues as required
