Consultant Physician


Grade/Classification as per contract
Permanent Full Time
(76 hrs per fortnight) 



We are seeking an experienced specialist in General Medicine to join our dedicated team to provide supervision and guidance to interns, registrars and students. This permanent full time position is available mid March and includes working a rotating 7 day, 24 hour roster including participation in an on-call roster.

The city of Horsham has a population of 19,500 and is a 300 kms from Melbourne on the Western Highway and 400kms to Adelaide. It is a well serviced city with diverse education and businesses, positioned at the northern end of the Grampians National Park, nearby lakes and world famous rock-climbing areas as well as being a wine and food hub.


The Health Service


Wimmera Health Care Group has an average of 325 births per year, 12,500 admissions and 4,600 operations and 16,000 ED attendances annually. We have a modern theatre complex, including a day procedure unit, a five-bed intensive care unit, and acute and subacute wards all set within a picturesque garden setting.


The Position


The Consultant Physician is responsible for providing specialist internal medicine services of the highest possible standard to ensure optimum, safe medical care outcomes working in a highly collaborative manner with the broader nursing and allied health teams.


The day-to-day role will include outpatient consulting sessions, ward rounds and patient assessment. The successful applicant will actively participate in the planning, co-ordination, evaluation and implementation of a range of clinical interventions that supports reflecting, evidence-based practice.


Key Selection Criteria include:


Essential:



  • A primary medical qualification registered or registrable with the Medical Board of Australia

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or, for an overseas- trained appointee, postgraduate clinical training, qualifications and experience in Internal Medicine which the College assesses as meeting its requirements for appointment to the position under Area of Need arrangements

  • Relevant clinical experience as a Specialist in Internal Medicine

  • Medicare provider numbers for all practice locations and recognition as a specialist by the Health Insurance Commission’s Specialist Recognition Advisory Committee for payment of Medicare benefits at the higher specialist rates

  • Full general registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

  • Relevant clinical experience and training in acute patients in an inpatient setting
