IBAC is responsible for preventing and exposing public sector corruption and police misconduct. We do this by: investigating corruption and police misconduct; and informing the public sector, police and the community about the risks and impacts of corruption and police misconduct, and ways in which it can be prevented. Our jurisdiction covers state and local government, police, parliament and the judiciary.

This Deputy Commissioner role assists IBAC's Commissioner in fulfilling the purpose and functions of IBAC particularly as they relate to IBAC's Victoria Police corruption and police misconduct jurisdiction.

Working closely with internal and external stakeholders including the Department of Justice and Community Safety, the Victorian Ombudsman, the Victorian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, the community legal sector and representatives from diverse community groups, the CEO and Executive team, the Deputy Commissioner will be responsible for a range of challenging and confidential matters including:

  • providing advice and making decisions on complaints and notifications of corrupt conduct and police misconduct and on IBAC reviews of Victoria Police investigations

  • issuing, cancelling and extending confidentiality notices
  • approving the use of other coercive powers

The Deputy Commissioner will also work closely with the Commissioner, CEO and Executive to provide leadership, to promote IBAC's vision, culture and reputation and manage and enhance productive relationships across the public sector.

This role calls for an experienced lawyer who brings extensive expertise in critical decision-making, an understanding of legislative and regulatory processes and policy and the gravitas, discretion and judgment essential for this important role. A background in investigative decision making would be very useful; strong stakeholder management, confident communication and influencing skills are key attributes.
